Mohamed Salah has scored 24 goals so far this season for Liverpool and the statistical comparisons to his best season in 2017/18, when he finished with 44, are favourable
Mohamed Salah just keeps on scoring.
Even in a season where Liverpool have struggled to create with as much fluidity as they have in previous years, the Egyptian has clinically found the back of the net at a higher rate than any other player in the country.
Salah already has 24 goals in all competitions this season – one better than he managed in the whole of last season – and his 17 in the Premier League is at least two better than any other player in the division.
Against RB Leipzig, as Liverpool established a two-goal lead in their Champions League last-16 first leg, Salah pulled himself level with Reds legend Ian St John in the all-time scorers list with a total of 118 goals for the club.
He did it, though, is 239 matches fewer, with Salah now joint-13th in the all-time scorers list – and he also has 41 assists in that period.
Thirteen more goals and he will enter the top 10; 59 more and he will move into the top five, and ahead of Michael Owen, Sir Kenny Dalglish, Robbie Fowler and Steven Gerrard.
Earlier this season, Salah overtook Gerrard to become Liverpool’s top scorer in the Champions League.
Ten more league goals with take Salah to 100 in the Premier League for Liverpool and 39 more will make him the Reds’ all-time leading scorer in the Premier League – despite having only played under four seasons so far.
If Liverpool were to make the Champions League final and Salah was to play in every single match between now and the end of the season, at the current rate of scoring, he would end the campaign with 38 – six short of his best total of 44.
But in his best 2017/18 debut season, 14 of his record-breaking 32 in the Premier League came in the final 13 matches of the campaign – the number remaining for Liverpool this season.
A further five came in the Champions League after that point, meaning 43 per cent of Salah’s total goals that season came after this point in the campaign.
He’s on 24 now – he was on 25 in 2017/18 – and while getting into a similar vein of form to finish the season in the same way might not happen, that just underlines how good Salah has been so far in 2020/21.
“It came as a bit of a surprise when he surpassed last season’s total by scoring against RB Leipzig,” said David Lynch on the Blood Red podcast.
“He did not have a poor year last season – he was a major part of the Premier League title-winning team and they also went deep-ish in the Champions League.
“But it just shows how influential he has been this season. They have not been the same creative force in recent weeks and months, so for him to still be getting the goals shows what a high-quality player he is.
“His form is what makes you think it is not impossible for them to go all the way in the Champions League, even though they have been off-colour in the Premier League.
